my latest fascination.... Korean language

One day several weeks back, I was out mowing my lawn when a Korean fellow wearing a martial arts uniform approached me and offered me free taekwondo classes.

I wasn't particularly interested, to be honest, but consented and gave him my contact info.

We set up a time, which I pushed back a few weeks after falling out of a tree.

After a few more adventures, I staggered half-broken into a free lesson last Friday evening after work. One good workout later, my legs were feeling much better, and I showed a couple of instructors how I'd gotten my muscles so messed up by overdoing it with Buddhist prostration practice.

In the course of interacting with the instructors and observing them with others, I surprised myself by applying to join the school.

A bit of Korean is spoken in class and is part of the curriculum. But my curiosity has gotten the better of me, and I've begun to learn more Korean than is strictly required by the school.

So far I've found a number of online resources quite useful, such as:

An Introduction to Korean

This spiffy Hangul game. Seriously, this is like crack.

And I also found a free/"lite" version of Byki language-learning flashcard software that I like so far.

I created this blog to help me keep track of the process as I go. I understand that some consider Korean one of the world's hardest languages, so I don't know if I'll fall flat on my face or manage to scrape by with the bare minimum requirements for the taekwondo class.

Maybe I'll pick up a little something. That would be cool.
